Meat Speciation
Mislabeling of food for fraudulent purposes is a long-standing and widespread problem, particularly in products with high economic value such as meat and meat-based products. In recent years, following “scandals” such as the horsemeat scandal, consumer interest in the authenticity of meat products has increased. Many consumers are concerned about the meat they eat, and correct labeling is an important means of enabling the consumer to make an informed choice.
ALScreen Meat ID is a premium quality molecular biology solution to provide the general laboratory and research personnel an easy and ready-to-use kit for the detection of specific meat species. Under optimal conditions, these kits provide remarkable sensitivity, granting the detection of at least 0.1% adulteration. It provides a Real-Time PCR method for detecting target species mitochondrial DNA in food, feed and environmental samples. The kits were designed to allow the simultaneous amplification (in multiplex) of the target meat species and an Internal Amplification Control (IAC) to exclude false negatives due to PCR inhibition. The duplex detection system helps maximize the amplification accuracy and simplify the reaction set-up.
